ABOUT

Debs is a theatre artist based in London and West Yorkshire.  She writes powerful one woman shows, sometimes directs them, and tours them internationally.  She also works very closely with acclaimed director John Wright (co founder of Told by an Idiot) on some of her shows, and often collaborates with others as performer, writer, director and deviser.

Her most recent show Lost In Blue, directed by John Wright, won 4 and 5 star reviews at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe and completed an extensive national tour.  2017 will see Debs begin touring her acclaimed retelling of King Lear, commencing with a performance in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe this summer.  This year will also see her begin working on a new collaboration with John Wright.

Debs’ work brings together the poetic and the irreverent, the ancient and the defiantly modern.  She is one of the UK’s most exciting writer- performers, creating playful, innovative work that can get deep under the skin. Debs regularly plays venues as diverse as the Royal Opera House, the British Library, the Southbank Centre and Shakespeare’s Globe theatre as well as many prestigious theatres and festivals both in the UK and abroad.

With a quick wit, eloquent physicality and a bewitching way with words, Debs’ work  has been hailed as “masterful verbal cinema”. Her acclaimed collaboration with  John Wright is redefining the shape of spoken word and performance storytelling, and her work with Shakespeare’s plays has helped foster a whole swathe of storytelling work at Shakespeare’s Globe: including two storytelling seasons of Shakespeare’s best known plays, performed by Globe Education actors,  facilitated and directed by Debs for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Winner of the Summerhall 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Award for Acting, twice voted one of the top five acts at the Towersey Festival (the only Spoken Word Artist in its fifty year history ever to achieve this), Storyteller and Education Consultant for Shakespeare’s Globe, Debs is a force of nature, a theatre maker not to be missed.
